An online masterclass with a master of the Italian tamburello and one of the leading voices on the European frame drum. The history of the frame drum in Europe, his musical life, and his approach to technique.

Andrea Piccioni is one of the most authoritative voices on the Italian tamburello and the wider European frame drum tradition. Through decades of study, performance and teaching he has helped redefine what the modern tamburello can be — deepening a folk instrument into a fully-realised musical language, and drawing freely on frame-drum traditions from across the Mediterranean and the East.
His playing joins Italian roots to a broader, philosophical view of rhythm — the frame drum as a way of thinking, not only an instrument to strike.
In this masterclass Andrea traced the history of the frame drum in Europe and his own musical journey within it. He shared his distinctive approach to playing — bringing Eastern philosophies into the music — and went deep on technique: the hand, the wrist, the touch, and the patient work that turns a folk drum into a refined art.
