An online masterclass with one of the leading voices in Iberian and Mediterranean percussion — founder of Coetus. His musical life, the percussion traditions of the Iberian peninsula, and his philosophy of playing together.

Aleix Tobias is one of the most important figures working in Iberian and Mediterranean percussion today. As the founder of Coetus — an orchestra built entirely from the hand drums and traditional percussion of the Iberian peninsula — he has done as much as anyone to recover, organise and reimagine a tradition that was nearly invisible on the concert stage.
His playing sits at a crossroads: the frame drums and folk percussion of Catalonia and the Mediterranean, in conversation with the wider world of hand drumming. It is music rooted in community — in the way percussion has always brought people together to play.
In this masterclass Aleix shared his musical journey, the world of Iberian percussion and the instruments and rhythms it lives in, and — at the heart of his work — his approach to communal playing and practice: how an ensemble listens, breathes and grows together, and what that asks of each player.
