About the Artist

A master of the doira

Abbos Kosimov is one of the world's foremost masters of the doira (also spelled doyra) — the traditional frame drum of Central Asia. Trained from the age of ten in the great Uzbek percussion tradition, he has carried the doira from its roots in Tashkent to the world's biggest stages, dazzling audiences with a technique and speed that seem to defy the simplicity of a single hand drum.

He has performed and recorded with artists as varied as Stevie Wonder and Zakir Hussain's Masters of Percussion, and founded his own ensemble to teach and preserve the art. Born in Uzbekistan, he is today both a global ambassador for the doira and a generous teacher of its secrets.

This is not an ordinary class. It is an intimate encounter — a small, close circle where you don't watch a master from afar, but sit beside one.

What to expect

This is a live online masterclass — not a recording, but a real conversation as much as a lesson. Abbos will share his musical journey from a childhood in the Uzbek percussion tradition to the world's great stages — along with the insights of a lifetime with the doira: the hand techniques and finger-rolls that give it such astonishing speed, his approach to practice and to building control, the role of the doira in accompaniment and ensemble, and the joy and spirit that make his playing so alive.
